HOW TO USE THIS MODULE
Welcome to the Module “Drafting and Cutting Pattern for Casual Apparel”. This module contains training materials and activities for you to complete.
The unit of competency “Draft and Cut Pattern for Casual Apparel” contains knowledge, skills and attitudes required for a Dressmaking NC II Qualification.
You are required to go through a series of learning activities in order to complete each of the learning outcomes of the module. In each learning outcome there are Information Sheets and Task Sheets. Follow these activities on your own and answer the Self-Check at the end of each learning activity.
If you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask your facilitator for assistance.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA: 1. Customer’s job requirements are determined in accordance with company’s practice. 1. Garment design is prepared in accordance with the client’s requirements. 2. Design and fabric are discussed and selected according to client’s specifications. 4. Special needs of the client are incorporated into the design based on procedures. 5. Measuring tools are prepared in accordance with job requirements. 6. Body measurements are taken based on procedures. 7. Body measurements of client are taken in sequence according to job requirements and standard body measurement. 8. Body measurements are recorded in line with company requirements/practice. 9. Drafting pattern tools are selected in accordance with job requirements. 10. Basic/Block pattern is drafted using appropriate equipment and customer’s specifications. 11. Drafted basic/block pattern is checked for accuracy based on customer’s specification. 12. Block pattern is laid out in accordance with company procedures. 13. Block pattern is manipulated in accordance with customer’s specifications. 14. Final pattern is labeled, filled and secured as per standard operating procedures (SOPs). 15. Learning Objectives:
After reading this information sheet, you will be able to identify and enumerate the different measuring tools based on the correct standard and in accordance with the job requirements.
Introduction:
Pattern and body measurements both require measuring tools. To ensure a good fit, you will measure accurately with the best tool for the client’s satisfaction. You can easily use the following measuring tools depending on your needs.
MEASURING TOOLS
Measuring Tools- are instruments used for obtaining quantities, dimensions or forces of real world objects.
L-square
a. Uses- it divides the garment into the desired measurement. It perfect squares and is useful in making straight lines and numbers. It can also function as a tape measure.
b. Characteristics- it has two arms connected perpendicularly.
i. The longer arm is twenty four inches long.
ii. The shorter arm is fourteen inches long.
Tape measure
a. Uses- it is used in taking body measurements. Fiberglasss tape is commonly used by the professional dressmaker.
b. Characteristics- the front has the measurement of 150 centimeters and 60” on the other side.
Yardstick
a.Uses - It is used for general marking and for measuring fabric grainline when laying out the Pattern.
b.Characteristics - the most useful sizes are 12” or 18” (30.5 cm or 46 cm long)
Ruler
a.Uses- it is used for general marking. It aids in connecting lines.
b. Characteristics- the most useful sizes are 12” or 18” (30.5 cm or 46 cm long). They are graduated in inches and centimeter which are commonly made of wood.
Seam Gauge
a. Uses- this measuring tool help make quick, accurate measurements for hems, buttonholes, scallops and pleats.
b. Characteristics- it is a small, 6”(15cm) metal or plastic ruler with a sliding marker.
T-square
a. Uses-it is specially designed to locate cross grains, alter patterns and square off straight edges.
b. Characteristics- it is usually made of wood.

HOW TO TAKE CLIENT’S BODY MEASUREMENTS
Learning Objectives:
After reading this information sheet, you will be able to gain knowledge on how to take client’s body measurement based on the correct procedure and in accordance to the prescribed standards. You will be able to follow correctly the salient measures to observe in taking client’s body measurements.
Introduction:
Before the pattern is made, body measurements should be taken to determine the correct pattern size. After the pattern is made the pattern pieces should be measured and compared with the corresponding body measurements. The measurement taken should be identified and recorded the accurate measurement on the Individual Measurement Chart.
Procedures:
There are several parts of the body to be measured. These are taken in:
1. Vertical measurement
2. Horizontal measurement
3. Circumferential measurement
Where and How to take Body Measurements
· Shoulder- measure from the tip of the left shoulder to the tip of the right shoulder.
· Back chest- measure from the left (back) armhole seam to the (back) armhole.
· Front Chest- measure from the left (front) armhole seam to the right (front) armhole seam.
· Bust- measure around the bust with the tape measure running on the same level in front at the back and on the sides.
· Tip of the Bust- measure from the center of the shoulder to the tip of the bust.
· Distance of the Bust- measure across from the tip of the tip of the bust.
· Empire level- measure from the center of the front shoulder over the bust down to the empire level which is directly below the bust.
· Empire Circumference- measure around the whole circumference of the empire level.
· Front Figure- measure from the center of the shoulder over the bust down to the waistline level.
· Back Figure- lay the tip of the tape measure on the center of the shoulder and run the tape measure over the shoulder blade down to the waistline level.
· Waist- measure along the whole circumference of the body at the waistline.
· First Hip – measure around the hip level where the stomach is fullest.
· Second Hip- measure around the hip level where the buttocks is fullest.
· Short Skirt- measure from the waistline level down to the desired skirt length for a short skirt.
· Long Skirt- measure from waist line level down to the desired level for a long skirt.
· Armhole- measure around the circumference of the armhole.
· Length of the Short Sleeve- measure from the tip of the shoulder down to the desired length of the short sleeve.
· Fullest Arm Circumference- measure around the upper arm and measure the desired width of the hem of the short sleeve.
· Elbow Length- measure from the tip of the shoulder down to the tip of the elbow.
· Three- fourth Length- measure from the tip of the shoulder over the elbow (with the arm slightly bent) to the ¾ length of the sleeve.
· Three- Fourth Circumference- measure along the whole circumference of the ¾ level of the arm with two fingers in at the end of the tape measure.
· Long Sleeve Length – measure from the tip of the shoulder over the elbow with arm slightly bent down to and after the wrist bone.
· Wrist- measure along the whole circumference of the wrist with two fingers in at the end of the tape measure for easing.
· Neck- measure around the whole circumference of the neck.
· Depth of the Neckline- lay the tip of the tape measure on the side corner of the neck and run it until the desired length or depth of the neckline.

This Trainees’ Record Book (TRB) is intended to serve as record of all accomplishment/task/activities while undergoing training in the industry. It will eventually become evidence that can be submitted for portfolio assessment and for whatever purpose it will serve you. It is therefore important that all its contents are viably entered by both the trainees and instructor.
The Trainees’ Record Book contains all the required competencies in your chosen qualification. All you have to do is to fill in the column “Task Required” and “Date Accomplished” with all the activities in accordance with the training program and to be taken up in the school and with the guidance of the instructor. The instructor will likewise indicate his/her remarks on the “Instructors Remarks” column regarding the outcome of the task accomplished by the trainees. Be sure that the trainee will personally accomplish the task and confirmed by the instructor.
It is of great importance that the content should be written legibly on ink. Avoid any corrections or erasures and maintain the cleanliness of this record.
This will be collected by your trainer and submit the same to the Vocational Instruction Supervisor (VIS) and shall form part of the permanent trainee’s document on file.

Specific instruction: · I will be observing you while performing the tasks. · Using the materials, tools and equipment, you are required to perform the task within 2 hours. · Prepare the appropriate measuring tools in accordance with job requirements. · Take client’s body measurements according to procedures. · Take client’s body measurements in sequence according to job requirements and standard body measurements. · Record body measurements in line with company requirements/practice. · After your demonstration, I will ask you some questions related to your demonstration. · You may call me when there is a need for me to translate or explain items for clarification. · After the questioning portion, I will give feedback regarding your performance. · Any questions/clarifications?
